CU hosts crucial battles against Patriots and Lions

LAWTON, Okla. — Cameron men’s basketball begins an important stretch of games this week as they host UT Tyler and A&M-Commerce in a pair of Lone Star Conference divisional rematches.

Starting 5:
1. Cameron, now 6-16 on the year and 5-11 in league play, have some ground to make up if they want to secure a spot in the Lone Star Conference Tournament; they currently sit in 14th place in the league rankings and the top-12 make the tournament.
2. Despite his team’s three-game losing skid, sophomore Darius Green has played solid minutes for coach Andrew Brown over the past few weeks, averaging 16.3 points per game over CU’s last four contests.
3. UT Tyler is in their first year under head coach Louis Wilson, who previously came from Adams State where he was 95-46 in five seasons; the Patriots are 6-15 overall and 3-13 in league play this season.
4. Of A&M-Commerce’s 14 wins, 10 of those have come at home in the Field House, as they have not been as dominant in true road games at just 4-4 on the season.
5. Senior Wayne Stewart leads the LSC and is 13th nationally with a .631 field goal percentage; the 6-7 post player leads the Lions with 19.3 points and 7.7 rebounds per game and was recently named to the “Dark Horse Dunker” bracket of 16, which is a competition to find the most under-the-radar high-flyers in all of college basketball.

Last time out:
Cameron is coming off of a disappointing road trip where the lost a pair of games against DBU and Tarleton by a combined score of 71 points. In the later contest against the Texans, CU fell behind by 20 points at the break after shooting just 28 percent from the field and going 0-9 from three-point range. They were unable to climb back in it during the second half like they have been able to in previous games and lost their third straight 84-58. Kendall Scott was the only Aggie to reach double-figures, as CU made just 24 field goals in the contest and went 6-24 from three.

About the Aggies:
Now 6-16 on the year and 5-11 in league play, the Aggies will need to make up some ground this weekend and next with four straight home games. Although, the Aggie Gym has not been as kind to CU this year as in years past, as they are just 2-8 on their home floor. The Black and Gold are averaging just over 70 points this season, shooting 40 percent from the floor and 35.6 percent from three-point land. They have excelled on the glass, averaging 37.7 rebounds per game, including a LSC-best 13.2 offensive boards per contest. Cameron’s struggles come on defense, where they give up an average of 78.9 points per game on a 46.8 shooting percentage. Brock Schreiner is the lone Aggie averaging over 10 points per game at 11.3, while the sophomore averages 2.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists per contest as well. Additionally, both Kendall Scott and Jordan Lewis average over 9.0 points per outing with Scott leading CU with 6.2 rebounds per game, which is 15th best in the LSC.

Scouting the Patriots:
The UT Tyler men have lost their last six contests and are 6-15 on the year and 3-13 against the rest of the Lone Star Conference. They have just two wins since the start of the new year, winning back-to-back outings against Texas A&M-International and Oklahoma Christian on Jan. 11 and Jan. 16. The Patriots are averaging just under 68 points per game, but are shooting over 42 percent from the field and 72.5 percent from the charity stripe. Their struggles have come on the defensive end, where they give up an average of 70 points while allowing teams to shoot 44.7 percent from the field against them. Senior guard Ty Glover leads the squad and is seventh in the conference with 17.1 points per game. Glover is shooting 45 percent from the field this season and also averages 4.9 rebounds and 1.6 steals per outing. Micah Fuller is second on the Patriot team with 11.5 points per game and makes 83 percent of his foul shots while also averaging 3.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.3 steals per outing.

Against UTT:
In the first battle between these two divisional foes, the Aggies enjoyed a 43-23 lead at halftime after shooting over 58 percent and going 7-12 from three in the first half. Their big lead swelled to 26 points early in the second half and CU cruised to a 71-52 victory. Schreiner scored an efficient 20 points for the Black and Gold, going 7-11 from the field and 4-7 from three. Scott added 12 points while freshman Connor Slater added a career-high 10 points and eight rebounds. Glover (14) and Fuller (10) were both in double-figures for the Patriots.

Scouting the Lions:
A&M-Commerce’s 14-8 overall record and 10-6 league mark has them sitting in the middle of the back in the league standings. They are just 1-3 in their last four game, with their one win coming in a 77-63 overtime victory against UTT. The Lions average nearly 80 points per game while shooting 45.6 percent from the field. They make right at 11 three-point field goals per contest and make them at a 36 percent clip. A&M-C averages 16 assists compared to just 14 turnovers and on defense they tally 8.0 steals and 4.1 blocks shots per contest. Behind Stewart, two other Lions are scoring in double-figures. Guard Deon Barrett is averaging 15.0 points, 4.0 assists, and 3.5 rebounds, while Deonta Terrell averages 13.2 points, 3.5 boards, 3.1 assists, and a team-high 1.9 steals per contest.

Against A&M-C:
Cameron opened the new year at the Field House in Commerce, Texas, falling 73-69 in the hard fought battle. CU found themselves down by eight at halftime, but used a 41-37 second half to claw back into the game. They tied the game at 69 on a Tyler Williams free throw, but went cold down the stretch, missing five shots in the final two minutes of play. The Aggies made just four of their 19 three-point attempts, and went 17-28 from the foul line in the loss. Lewis and Scott both had 14 points to lead the Black and Gold, while Steward had a game-high 22 points for A&M-Commerce.

Who has next:
The Aggies host two more divisional rivals to wrap up their final slate of home games for the season. CU will try to get revenge on Oklahoma Christian on Thursday, Feb. 20, as they lost to the Eagles 63-52 on the road, and then will look to go 2-0 against UAFS when they host them on Saturday, Feb.. 22 for Senior Day and Homecoming.
