Cheptum paces CU to sixth at LSC Championship

CANYON, Texas — Edna Cheptum paced the Aggie women’s cross country team to a sixth place finish at the Lone Star Conference Championships on Saturday morning, recording an All-LSC performance.
Cheptum, who has led the Aggies all fall during their debut season as a program, finished in 12th place individually with a time 23:46.90, earning her the all-conference nod.
Following Cheptum for CU was Keyanna Patterson in 29th and Alma Duran in 30th, who each ran a time of right around 24:45, while Valeria Villatoro, who was a three time LSC Female Freshman Runner of the Week during the regular season, finished in 32nd with a time of 24:46.20. Additionally, Taylor Esquivel, Chloe Phillips, and Karla Taylor all finished in the top-50.
Cameron as a team finished with 138 points, a total time of 2:03:10.60, and an average time of 24:38.12 in their first ever LSC Championship Meet.
MSU Texas claimed the team championship, finished with 57 points thanks to three All-LSC runners and six in the top-25. Behind the Mustangs was Tarleton State in second with 68 points, Eastern New Mexico in third with 87 points, West Texas A&M in fourth with 121, and Angelo State rounded out the top-5 with 130 points.
ENMU’s Mercy Rotich dominated the field, finishing a whole minute ahead of her closest competition and winning the individual championship.
The Aggie women will look to improve on their times as they compete at the NCAA South Central Regional in Denver, Colo. on Nov. 17.
