Cameron’s season ends at the hands of the Buffs

CANYON, Texas – The Cameron men’s basketball team’s 2019-20 season ends with a 105-68 loss to No. 3 West Texas A&M on the road, as CU misses out on the Lone Star Conference Tournament for the first time in 10 years.

The Aggies entered their final regular season game needing to upset the top team in the conference to punch their postseason ticket. CU was in a five-way tie for 10th place in the league standings but held the tiebreaker over just one of the other four teams, UAFS.

In Cameron’s regular season finale, West Texas dominated from the tip, using an 18-3 run to take a 22-7 lead by the under-eight media timeout. The Buffs shot over 54 percent in the half and made 11 three’s in the first half to lead by 23, 52-29, after the first 20 minutes of action.

The Aggies shot 35.5 percent from the floor in the first half, going 4-10 from three and 3-4 from the foul line. They were also out-rebounded 23-15 and turned it over 10 times by the break.

Kendall Scott had over half of CU’s points in the first half, scoring 15 on 6-10 shooting from the field. Brock Schreiner added nine points on 3-3- shooting from long-range.

West Texas did not let up in the second half, scoring 53 points on 57 percent shooting from the field. They also went 9-18 from three and 10-12 from the foul line as they cruised to a 105-68 victory on their Senior Day in Canyon.

Cameron finished the night shooting 40 percent from the field while going just 7-22 from three and 7-13 from the charity stripe. They were also out-rebounded 42-34 and turned the ball over 16 times during the road loss.

Schreiner finished the game with a CU-high 19 points on 6-11 shooting from the field. The sophomore guard made a career-best five three-point field goals and was 2-2 from the foul line. Fellow sophomore Scott added 18 points on 7-13 shooting while Tyler Williams added 12 points and Darius Green scored 10. Jalen Nicholas led Cameron with seven boards to go along with eight points in his final game.

The Aggies end the season at 9-19 overall and 8-14 in league play. They finish in a tie for 12th place in the LSC standings with Eastern New Mexico, St. Mary’s, and Midwestern State with the Mustangs claiming the last spot in the tournament as the No. 12 seed. CU misses out on the LSC Tournament for the first time since the 2009-10 season.
