Baseball hits the road to face ranked Angelo State

LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron Aggie baseball team is looking to turn their season around after starting the season 1-5, as they have momentum heading into their four-game set with No. 12 Angelo State.
The Aggies were 0-5 heading into their series finale against Texas A&M-Kingsville on Monday, but found a way to secure their first win of 2020 and create some momentum heading into week three. In game three of the series, Kyle Williams‘ squad posted seven runs on their way to a 7-3 victory over the Javelinas. The Black and Gold totaled 12 runs in games two and three of the series after coming around to score just five times in the previous four outings.
On the bump, the Aggies got two standout performances, coming from Jayce Clem and Kalen Haynes in the Monday afternoon affair against Kingsville. Haynes dealt five innings, giving up just a pair of hits, and a run. His five punchouts helped him work out of a plethora of jams throughout the contest. That earned Haynes a no-decision before Jayce Clem swooped in to nab his first career win.
Clem tossed three innings to the tune of one hit and one run. He also earned a pair of strikeouts, making quick work of the Javelinas facing just four over the minimum.
Cooper Edwards has played in all six contests for the Aggies and boasts a team-high .500 batting average with a pair of extra-base hits and an RBI.
Izrael Trevino leads the way with 14 total bases, including a pair of home runs and a triple to while swinging for a .240 average with an .829 on-base percentage.
This weekend, CU faces another tough test in Angelo State, who is a perfect 6-0 to start the season. Their lowest offensive output this season has been five runs. Topping out at 26 runs in a game, the Rams have already totaled 69 runs in just six games. Their hot start has proven they were deserving of their No. 1 ranking in the LSC preseason poll.
Seven Ram hitters are batting over .300 this season, with five of those hitters turning in a .400 average or better. They are led by the LSC’s and the South Central Region’s Preseason Player of the Year Josh Elvir, who is hitting .450 with seven RBI to start the 2020 campaign.
On the hill, ASU sees four players with a sub-2 ERA, including a trio of hurlers posting a zero ERA. As a staff, the they own an impressive 2.70 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP, and a .213 batting average against through 50 innings.
The two most impressive starters for ASU are Trent Baker and Benjamin Elder, who each have 18 strikeouts and a sub .200 batting average against. Elder has thrown 10 innings to the tune of a 0.00 ERA in two starts. For Baker, he holds a 1.50 ERA in his 12 innings of work.
Angelo State’s rotation also features this week’s conference Pitcher of the Week in Ben Elder. Elder struck out 12 in his six innings of work against Oklahoma Christian this past Sunday.
Each team will face their first four-game series of the season. The series will start on Friday, Feb. 14 at 3 p.m., before a Saturday doubleheader with the first pitch slated for 2 p.m. The weekend slate will wrap up on Sunday at 1 p.m. in San Angelo, Texas
Cameron’s second road series of the year will be followed by their second home series. The Black and Gold will next host Texas A&M-International for a four-game set, Feb. 21-23.
