LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron University track and field teams kicks off their first official indoor season at the Pittsburg State Crimson and Gold Invitational on Saturday.

The race in Kansas is the first of five meets on the indoor slate for both the Aggie men and women. After completing their first official track season in program history last spring, the CU men and women get to compete for an indoor championship this winter.

Cameron boasts a strong group of runners on both teams. The CU men are led by senior James Majenge, who is coming off an All-American cross country season. The Secunda, South Africa native was the Lone Star Conference champion in the 1500m race and finished second in the 5000m event last spring. Majenge leads a strong group of distance runners that includes Chris DunnRoy KipkorirEduardo Gutierrez, and Celso Ramirez.

This offseason, CU head coach Zach Johnson added Elgin HS standout Dakota McMullin, who will compete in the 200m and 400m events, while Cache HS graduate Ethan Zarraga will compete in the pole vault and sprints.

The Aggie women also have a strong crop of distance runners that includes Edna Cheptum, who finished 14th in the 1500 and fifth in the steeplechase at the LSC Championships last spring, and Keyanna Patterson, who came in 19th in the 5000m at the league meet.

Shianne Taylor, who finished in 18th in the 400m at the LSC Championship last spring, leads the middle distance runners along with returners Alexis Jefferson and Prisca Kouao and newcomers Isabelle Carwile and Bailey Sullivan. Additionally, CU will have Brooke Morriston competing in the shot put and Sarah Wright in the 400m and jumps.

Saturday’s meet will be CU’s only event in 2019. They will be back in action on Jan. 18 at the Central Oklahoma Weilert Open. They then return to Pittsburg, Kan. on Feb. 1 for the PSU Invitational before returning back to Norman, Okla. For the UCO Alumni Classic on Feb. 15. The indoor season concludes at the LSC Championships, Feb. 22-23, in Lubbock, Texas.
