Cameron heads west to face the Lady Buffs and Greyhounds

LAWTON, Okla. — After beginning the season with six non-conference games, the Aggie women’s basketball team will get their first taste of Lone Star Conference action this week, visiting No. 5 West Texas A&M on Thursday and Eastern New Mexico on Saturday.

Starting 5:
1. As a team, Cameron ranks No. 2 in Division II in total three point field goals made (68) and per game (11.3), hitting them at a 36.4 percent clip.
2. Freshman Maighan Hedge is second in the LSC with 18.5 points per game to go along with a league leading free throw percentage of 94.9.
3. West Texas A&M is ranked No. 5 in both of the major Division II top-25 polls (WBCA and D2SIDA).
4. WT senior Tyesha Taylor leads the Lone Star with a 70.4 field goal percentage to go along with 17.8 points and 5.0 rebounds per contest.
5. Eastern New Mexico ranks first in the league with 21 blocked shots, 63 steals, and an opponents’ scoring average of 55.8.
About the Aggies:
After a big win over now No. 25 Emporia State, Cameron has gone 0-2 losing to two tough teams in Southwestern Oklahoma State and Harding, and now enter LSC play with a 2-4 season record. They are averaging 74.2 points while shooting 40.3 percent from the floor, however they have struggled defensively, giving up 82.7 points per contest to their opposition while giving up a 43.1 shooting percentage. CU is also averaging 41.8 rebounds, 12.7 assists, 6.3 steals, and 2.0 blocks per outing. They also have the most turnovers per game in the league (20.0).
Hedge not only leads CU in points, but is also shooting 50 percent from both the floor and the perimeter to go along with a team leading nine steals. Natalie Halbleib also ranks in the top-10 of the conference in points, averaging 15 points while shooting 37.5 percent from three. Additionally, Parfitt McNair and Ava Battese are scoring just over 10 points per outing. McNair also leads CU with 17 assists, while Lejha Smith has a team best 7.7 rebounds per game and eight total blocks.
Scouting the Lady Buffs:
West Texas A&M, the defending league champion, has started out the season with a perfect 6-0 record, beating six Rockey Mountain Athletic opponents to begin the year. They are outscoring their opponents by an average of 22.7 points, while shooting a DII best 53.9 percent from the field. WT is also seventh in the nation with a 43.5 three point percentage and second with 22.7 assists per game.
While Taylor leads the squad with 17.8 points per game, Lucy Burke is second with a 10.3 scoring average, while shooting 58.3 percent from the floor and going 19-33 from the perimeter. Additionally, four other Lady Buffs are scoring eight or more points, including Lexi Hightower (9.8 ppg.), who is second on the team with 10 made three pointers.
The Series vs. WT:
– WT leads the overall series 44-3 and has won 15 straight over CU.
– The Aggies just have one win all time in Canyon (Jan. 14, 2012), which was the last time Cameron beat the Lady Buffs.
– Last time out, Cameron fell by nine points in Lawton, 70-61, as Battese went 4-8 from three for CU and Hightower led WT with 19 points.
Scouting the Greyhounds:
Eastern New Mexico is 4-1 heading into conference play, coming off of a 2-0 record at the WT Thanksgiving Classic. Their one loss came against Division I Abilene Christian, 78-46. Offensively, they average just 63.4 points while shooting 36.3 percent from the floor, 28.4 percent from the perimeter, and 66.7 percent from the charity stripe. Defensively however, ENMU holds opponents to shooting 34.6 percent from the field and forces them into 22.2 turnovers thanks to 12.6 steals per game.
Treyanna Clay is the lone Greyhound averaging in double-figures, scoring 10.0 points per game, while also grabbing 5.6 rebounds and leading the team with 10 steals. Aliva Lewis leads the team and is second in the LSC with 9.8 rebounds to go along with a team-best eight blocks; she is also averaging 6.6 points through five games.
The Series vs. ENMU:
– Eastern New Mexico owns a 24-14 all-time series lead over the Aggies, including a 15-4 mark in Portales.
– CU has not won against ENMU since Jan. 7, 2016.
– Last year against the Greyhounds in Portales, McNair and Battese combined for 35 points in a 65-57 loss.
Next Up:
On deck for the Aggies will be back-to-back non-conference contests and then an exhibition game to end the 2018 calendar year. CU will host Lubbock Christian on Saturday, Dec. 8 and then travel to St. Mary’s on Dec. 18. Cameron will then face Division I Stephen F. Austin on Dec. 29 in an exhibition to close out 2018.
