Aggie men ranked eighth in LSC Preseason Poll

RICHARDSON, Texas — The Lone Star Conference Preseason Polls were released on Wednesday and the Aggie men’s basketball team was selected to finish eighth by coaches and media representatives from around the league.

The Cameron men finished last season with an 11-17 overall record and a 7-11 LSC mark. They finished tied for sixth in the conference standings and ended up losing in the first round of the LSC Championship, falling to Tarleton State 63-49.

CU returns seven players from last season’s squad that will play during the 2018-19 season, including seniors Tyus Momohand Zach Dumas. Also back for the Black and Gold are dynamic scorer Johann Tate, forward’s Chris RoyalCole Lehr, and Jalen Nicholas, and shooter Jordan Lewis.

Joining Cameron’s returners will be six true freshmen, including top Oklahoma High School players Dalton Vinson and Brock Schreiner, and Texas standouts Andrew NguyenKendall ScottHunter Quick, and Darius Green.

Entering his third season as they head man, Andrew Brown will be joined on the bench by two new assistant coaches, as Central Missouri graduate Brett O’Neil and former Aggie Mekaile Reed were hired as graduate assistants this summer.

Cameron received just 87 total votes in the poll. Texas A&M-Commerce was picked in the top spot, picking up 15 first place votes, while West Texas A&M was voted second with 11 top nods. Tarleton State was picked third and Angelo State fourth, while UT Permian Basin, who claimed the other two first place votes, was picked fifth.

MSU Texas and Eastern New Mexico came in ahead of the Aggies in sixth and seventh, while Texas A&M-Kingsville and Western New Mexico rounded out the poll in ninth and tenth.  

Additionally, the Lion’s Reggie Reid was voted the LSC Preseason Player of the Year, receiving 12 of the 28 votes. Reid was the league’s Newcomer of the Year and a first-team All-LSC performer with an average of 16.3 points and 4.2 assists per game a season ago.

The Aggies will kick off the season by hosting the LSC/Heartland Challenge, where they will play Newman on Nov. 9 and Oklahoma Christian on Nov. 10 at the Aggie Gym.
