Keep It Green 2009 Essay Contest - Statement from the Judges

It has been a pleasure to read the thoughtful essays presented for the Lawtoninfo.com contest. Many of the students presented highly original and creative ideas. Others were able to articulate their ideas with particular strength of literary style. In harmony with the contest guidelines, we did not view this as being primarily an exercise in spelling or grammar. Rather, we looked for those essays that were best able to create a uniquely original vision by balancing elements of creativity and style. We feel that these guidelines produced a wealth of truly original thought and gave us an opportunity to listen openly to the fresh ideas of our developing citizen writers. We hope that Lawtonians who view the essays during the open voting period will make their selections based on the same guidelines
We were truly impressed with the fantastic creativity of our youth and the instructors of all these teens deserve gold stars. In addition to the creative ideas in the finalists' essays, others contained remarkable and original ideas, too. Some were whimsical, others more pragmatic, but all were quite thought-provoking.
Most Unique Ideas:
Elementary:
-more money for books in school and public libraries (a common sentiment!);
-daily running to improve health;
-a dress code banning suits for men (!) but allowing dresses for ladies and pants and t-shirts for teens;
-improved care for abandoned animals (another common concern for Lawton students);
-creating laws mandating jail time for those who hurt the environment proportionate to the "hurt" that they do;
-more sidewalks with safety railings placed between the sidewalks and street traffic;
